Basic Formula FAQ
What is the difference between Hy-Vee Mother’s Choice milk-based and soy-based infant formulas?
The main differentiation between the milk-based and soy-based infant formulas
is the protein used in the formulas. The protein in milk-based formulas comes from
cow’s milk which has been heat treated, and the sugar or carbohydrate is lactose, unless the formula is specifically manufactured to be lactose-free. Soy-based formulas
are milk-free and lactose-free – the protein in these formulas comes from a soybean
source that is also easily digested. Sometimes babies suffer from lactose-intolerance
or a certain allergic reaction to milk-protein. If you suspect that this might be
the case with your baby, speak to your physician, and ask if he or she recommend
a soy-based formula or possibly an extensively hydrolyzed formula (formula in which
the protein has been predigested, decreasing the likelihood of a reaction). Soy-based
formulas are also an option for parents who seek a vegetarian-based diet for their
infant.

What does ISO-9001 mean?
Hy-Vee Mother’s Choice infant formulas are manufactured by PBM Nutritionals in the only ISO 9001:2000–certified, infant formula–manufacturing facility in the United States. Located in Georgia, Vermont, PBM Nutritionals
is the only domestic manufacturer in the infant formula category that adheres to both FDA guidelines and the stringent set of quality-assurance regulations set by the
International Organization for Standardization.
ISO-9001 represents the international standard of operations for quality assurance. According to the ISO Web site:
"ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards. Although ISO's principal activity is the development of technical standards, ISO standards also have important economic and social repercussions. ISO standards make a positive difference, not just to engineers and manufacturers for whom they solve basic problems in production and distribution, but to society as a whole."

What is the whey-to-casein ratio?
The whey-to-casein ratio for the milk-based formulas is 60/40. The soy based formulas do not contain casein or whey and derive their protein from soy sources.
Hy-Vee Mother’s Choice soy-based formulas are milk-free and lactose-free, and the protein in these formulas comes from a soybean source that is also easy for a baby to digest. If a baby exhibits signs of lactose intolerance or certain allergic reactions to milk protein, the physician may recommend a soy-based formula to help treat these conditions.

Formula Use & Storage
Should I sterilize baby bottles and use boiled water when making baby formula?
Sterilization of the water and equipment used in preparing baby formula
is always a common recommendation, unless you have spoken to your health physician
and decided it is unnecessary. You should read all the label instructions before preparing HyVee Mother’s Choice formula, and always ensure that the practices and
utensils you use in preparing the formula are clean. It is important to mention
that the American Dietetic Association does not recommend preparing infant formula with boiling
hot water because of possible problems with the physical stability of the bay formula
(i.e. clumping or separation) and nutrient degradation.

How should I warm baby formula?
We only recommend that customers warm baby formula using a warm water bath.
Bottles should be warmed in a pot of water heated on the stove. Never warm formula
in the microwave.
Can I heat my baby’s formula in the microwave?
No. Microwaving causes “hot spots” and can therefore lead to serious burns.
Because baby formula would be heated unevenly if placed in a microwave, parts of
the formula that are heated extensively may have nutrient breakdown. Nutrients are
destroyed by high temperatures.

leaving an oily layer on top of the formula.
How long can powdered baby formula be used after it has been opened?
Powdered baby formula can be used for one month after it has been opened.
After this time fats and oils oxidize. Please refer to the label for further clarification.

Should I freeze ready-to-feed baby formula?
No, you should not freeze ready-to-feed baby formula because it will change
the composition of the product.
Should I use a baby formula product beyond its expiration date?
No, all baby formula containers have “use by” or “use before” dates to
ensure that the consumer receives a wholesome, high-quality product. Baby formula
should not be bought or fed beyond the expiration date. After the expiration date,
some vitamin levels decrease and changes in physical properties, such as discoloration
and separation of fat, may occur. Any baby formula that is out-of-date at the time
of purchase should be returned to the store from which it was purchased for exchange
or reimbursement.

How do I supplement baby formula feeding with breastfeeding?

needs of your baby.

Cans of commercially prepared baby formulas (ready-to-feed or concentrate)
may be safely stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours after opening.
